Tribs hold off ASA

ROCHESTER - The MCC men's lacrosse team won its second straight game, holding off an athletic ASA squad to win 18-13 Saturday afternoon on DiMarco Field.

The Tribunes (6-3) built a seven-goal lead early in the fourth quarter and held off the Avengers down the stretch.

Matt McDowell and Kasey Olsen combined for 11 goals and six assists to pace the Monroe attack. McDowell scored three of his six goals in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

MCC led the entire way, but the Avengers always stayed within striking distance. David Lehman started the scoring and Olsen cashed in twice as the Tribunes took an early 3-0 lead in the opening quarter. But ASA responded with two to cut it to 3-2 heading to the second.

The teams exchanged goals in the second before Ian Mohr, McDowell, and Olsen scored in succession as the quarter wound down to put Monroe up 8-4 at the break.

ASA battled back once again and scored the first two out of the break. But McDowell and Jeremy Powers tallied to restore a four-goal lead, which the team carried to the fourth.

MCC then scored the first three in the final frame to take control. Olsen, Curtis Raymond, and McDowell found the back of the cage in a span of 44 seconds to make it 15-8.

The Avengers tried to rally, but McDowell came through to keep Monroe in control. ASA scored to make it 15-9, but the sophomore attack responded 45 seconds later. The Avengers cut it back to six less than two minutes after that, but McDowell again was there with a timely goal for the Tribunes.

ASA added a pair of goals down the stretch but ran out of time.

McDowell finished with six goals and three assists and Olsen had five goals and three assists. Lehman added two goals and three helpers and Raymond also scored twice. Jake Moss chipped in with one goal and one assist.

Andrew Kausch finished with 17 saves in goal for Monroe. Jared George gathered a game-high nine ground balls while Joe English picked up seven. English and Alex deNormand both caused two Avenger turnovers.
