HERKIMER, New York - Matt McDowell scored five goals, including the eventual game-winner midway through the fourth quarter, as the MCC men's lacrosse team defeated Herkimer College 10-9 in a Region III game Wednesday night.
The win moved the Tribunes to 9-4 overall on the season, including a 6-2 mark that has the team firmly in third place in the Region III standings. Monroe hosts Hudson Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regular season finale.
McDowell's fifth and final goal put the Tribunes up 10-8 with 7:26 remaining in the final quarter. The Generals brought it to within one on a man-up score with 1:11 left, but MCC goalie Andrew Kausch and the Tribune defense held off a late Herkimer charge.
Kausch finished with 15 saves on the game.
The Tribunes jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter as McDowell and Jake Moss scored twice apiece. MCC went up 6-2 before Herkimer responded with three goals late in the second quarter to cut the lead to one at the break.
McDowell tallied two more in the third quarter to put MCC up 9-6 entering the fourth. The Generals scored the first two in the final frame before McDowell scored the eventual winner midway through the quarter.
