Tribs hold on to defeat FLCC, advance in regionals

ROCHESTER - The MCC men's lacrosse team broke open a tie game at the half with six third-quarter goals and held on down the stretch to defeat Finger Lakes Community College 12-10 in a Region III first round game Wednesday.

The third-seeded Tribunes (9-4) advance to take on second-seeded Genesee on Saturday in Syracuse. The winner qualifies for the NJCAA national tournament.

Tied at four at the half, MCC grabbed momentum by scoring the first four goals of the third quarter. David Lehman had two of the scores, and Austin Jobson and Jake Moss added the others as Monroe went up 8-4.

FLCC then scored to break the run, but Moss and Hudson Weil tallied late in the quarter to give the Tribunes a 10-6 lead heading to the fourth.

The Lakers bounced right back, though, scoring four of the first five goals in the fourth to cut the lead to 11-10 with just over five minutes to play. But Weil scored an insurance goal with 1:02 remaining, Richard Scacchetti won the ensuing faceoff, and the Tribunes ticked off the final seconds.

Moss and Weil finished with three goals and two assists apiece for MCC. Jobson had three goals and one assist, Lehman tallied two goals and two assists, and Brandon Barnhart scored once.

Mark Campbell made 11 saves in goal for Monroe. Scacchetti won 16 out of 26 faceoffs and gathered a game-high 11 ground balls.
