ROCHESTER - After weeks of bad weather, the MCC softball was finally able to play its home opener on Thursday afternoon. The result was a key sweep of Niagara County Community College in WNYAC and Region III action.
Lexy Rouse got the win in the opener and helped herself out with a two-run homer as the Tribunes won 5-1. Monroe allowed a game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh of game two before responding with four in the eighth to come away with a 6-2 win. Amanda Gillen provided the punch with a two-run blast.
MCC scored all the runs it needed in the bottom of the second in game one. Kayla Henning doubled to lead things off and came around on a Niagara miscue. Amanda Colon followed with a run-scoring hit before Rouse drove a pitch deep over the left field wall to make it 4-0.
Monroe's other run came on an RBI double by Tori Thuman in the fourth.
Rouse took it from there. The sophomore allowed one run and struck out eight in the complete game effort.
Monroe scored single runs in the third and sixth innings to take a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. Thuman plated Rouse with a triple for the first run, and Hannah Evingham's infield pop-up landed between a trio of Thunderwolves to plate Gillen for the second run.
Niagara responded in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff base hit followed by a home run to tie the game and send it to extras.
Monroe wasted no time taking control in the eighth. With Tia Aunkst aboard at second via the international tie-breaker, Gillen sent a 2-0 pitch far over the left-center field fence to put MCC up 4-2.
A pair of walks and a base hit from winning pitcher Bri Wagner then loaded the bases for Rouse, who lined a single to left to plate two more and provide the final margin.
Wagner worked around a leadoff hit in the eighth to retire the next three for the win. Wagner went the distance for the Tribunes, striking out 11 along the way.
