Tribs take two from Onondaga

SYRACUSE - The MCC softball team took a pair of crucial Region III contests on Saturday by sweeping Onondaga Community College on the road.

The Tribunes took game one 9-5 before winning in walk-ff fashion, 8-7, on an Amanda Gillen base hit in the nightcap.

Monroe improved to 18-4 in Region III and 24-12 overall.

The Tribunes got off to a quick start in game one, scoring two in the first, two in the second, and four in the third to take control. Hannah Evingham and Gillen had run-scoring hits in the first as MCC went ahead 2-0.

Lexy Rouse and Tori Thuman added consecutive RBI doubles in the second to make it 4-0. Rouse then highlighted a four-run third with a two-run triple.

Kayla Henning and Rouse had three hits apiece while Evingham, Gillen, and Madison Gardepe all added two each. Bri Wagner struck out nine and got the victory for MCC.

The Tribunes relinquished a one-run lead in the top of the seventh in game two before rallying in the bottom half for the win.

Trailing 7-6, Rouse led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk before Thuman reached on an error. After a groundout, Gillen came through with the game-winning single to score the runners for the 8-7 win.

Gillen and Heather Fontana finished with two hits each for MCC. Becky Knorr went the distance and struck out four for the win.
