Corning edges Monroe in regionals

CORNING, New York - The seventh-seeded MCC softball team gave No. 2 Corning everything it could handle before falling 4-3 in a Region III first round game Tuesday afternoon.

The Tribunes slammed three home runs, but the Red Barons used a three-run fifth inning to take the lead and advance to the regional finals this weekend. MCC finishes the season with a record of 13-16.

Monroe jumped ahead early as Jen Maysuch launched a solo homer to left leading off the third inning. Corning responded with a single run in the bottom half to tie it at 1.

The fireworks continued in the fourth for the Tribunes, as Amanda Gillen hit a solo home run to make it 2-1. Julia Grace followed with a single and moved to second on an error, but was left stranded.

The Red Barons took command in the fifth. A leadoff homer tied it before a pair of singles and a double brought in two more as Corning went up 4-2.

Tori Thuman then drilled a home run to straightaway center in the top of the sixth to bring Monroe within one.  But that was the last run the Tribunes could muster as Corning came away with the tight win.

Bri Wagner pitched well in defeat for MCC. The sophomore allowed four runs and scattered 10 hits in the complete game effort. Colby Kidder chipped in with a pair of hits.
