Lady Tribs romp past Erie into finals

ROCHESTER - The top-seeded MCC women's basketball team left no doubt in its Region III, Division II semifinal matchup with Erie Community College on Saturday, cruising past the Kats 99-27 to advance to the championship game Sunday.

The Tribunes (28-0) will face second-seeded Niagara County Community College (28-3) at 3 p.m. for the title. The winner will move on to the NJCAA Division II national tournament.

Regional Player of the Year Shanice Johnson led an early charge as Monroe jumped out to a 27-8 lead after one quarter and a 50-12 advantage at the break. Johnson was one of five Tribunes in double figures as she finished with 13 to go along with six rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

The Tribunes harassed the Kats into 31 turnovers and carried a massive 64-29 edge in rebounding. Chelsey Wilbern and Caitie Broderick led MCC with 10 boards each while Shyana McLeod had eight.

Adre'onia Coleman led all scorers with 14 for Monroe. Deja Carroll added 13, and Kiki Bynes and Wilbern tallied 10 each. Alexis Brito scored nine, Naje Gibson added eight, and Abby White and McLeod had seven apiece.
