Lady Tribs book return trip to nationals

ROCHESTER - The perfect season continues for the Monroe Community College women's basketball teams, as the Lady Tribunes pulled away for a 75-50 victory over Niagara County Community College to claim the Region III, Division II championship Sunday afternoon.

With the win, MCC booked a return trip to the NJCAA Division II national tournament, which will be held in Overland Park, Kansas, March 15-19.

Tournament MVP Deja Carroll scored 10 of her 13 after the break as the Tribunes shook off a slow start. MCC trailed by one after the first quarter and was ahead by four heading into the half.

The lead was still four at 41-37 with time winding down in the third before Monroe closed out the quarter on a 10-2 run. Naje Gibson scored four during the spurt and Abby White added a big 3 as the Tribunes took a 51-39 lead into the final frame.

MCC then pulled away in the fourth, outscoring the Thunderwolves 24-11 to put the game away. Kiki Bynes nailed a pair of 3's and scored eight as the Tribunes started the quarter on a 13-4 run to build the lead over 20.

Carroll also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out three assists to take the tournament's top honor. Gibson added 16 points and nine boards and Shanice Johnson had 15 points for Monroe.

Bynes had 13 and Adre'onia Coleman 10 for the Tribunes. Johnson, Bynes and Coleman were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Alba Perez scored 17 and Alliyah Gillespie had 16 and represented Niagara on the All-Tournament Team.
