Lady Tribs nab top seed at nationals

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas - The Monroe Community College women's basketball team has earned the top overall seed for next week's NJCAA Division II national tournament.

The Lady Tribunes enter the tournament ranked No. 1 in the nation and unbeaten with a 29-0 record. MCC qualified for nationals via a 75-50 win over Niagara County Community College on Feb. 28.

The tournament will be held March 15-19 in Overland Park, Kans., on the campus of Johnson County Community College. The Tribunes finished in fourth place at nationals a year ago.

MCC is in search of its fifth NJCAA national title. The Tribunes won it all in 2001, 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Awaiting Monroe in next Tuesday's first round is 16th-seeded United Tribes Technical College (18-14), out of Bismarck, N.D. The Thunderbirds qualified for the NJCAA tournament after an 86-81 victory over Southeast Community College in the District F title game March 5.

All games from the tournament will be streamed live via NJCAA TV. Fans may also follow MCC Athletics on Twitter for in-game updates during Tuesday's first round contest.
