COLUMBIA, Maryland - Morgan Hollenbeck scored MCC's final three goals, including the game-tying and go-ahead scores in the final minutes, as the top-ranked Tribunes held off No. 2 Howard Community College 12-11 in a thrilling women's lacrosse battle Tuesday evening.
Monroe improved to 7-0 and won its 75th consecutive game overall. It took everything MCC had to add to the streak, and Hollenbeck assured that it lived to see another game.
The sophomore midfielder converted a free position effort to give the Tribunes a 10-9 lead with 14:24 to play. The Dragons responded with a pair of goals to take an 11-10 edge as the Monroe attack went dormant for almost 10 minutes.
Hollenbeck struck again with 4:25 left as MCC tied it up. She then provided the game-winner at the 2:54 mark, taking a feed from Charity Warner and beating the Howard goalie.
The Dragons had a couple possessions down the stretch, but Tribune goalie Sarah Annable came up with a save on one and two others ended in turnovers as Monroe came away with the win.
MCC jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before Howard scored five straight to take command. Monroe got one back when Dana Isaacs converted just before the half to make it 6-4. That goal served as a shift in momentum, as the Tribunes scored the first four in the second half to go up 8-6.
The teams then traded goals to set up the final sequence.
Hollenbeck totaled three goals while Janee DeLuca and Christie Hahn added two goals and two assists apiece. Isaacs had two goals, nine draw controls, and two caused turnovers, and Kendall Jones scored twice.
Annable finished with seven saves.
