Markou, Broderick named All-American

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - MCC soccer players Eleni Markou and Caitie Broderick were announced as NJCAA Division I All-Americans Friday afternoon.

Markou was selected to the first team, while Broderick was named to the second. The duo helped lead the Lady Tribunes (14-3-3) to Region III and District E titles and a trip to the national tournament, where the team reached the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Paradise Valley on penalty kicks.

A complete list of this year's All-Americans may be found here.

Markou (Kastoria, Greece), the Region III Player of the Year, led Monroe in many categories. The freshman forward finished the season with 29 goals, 11 assists, and 69 points. Her goal total was good for No. 6 in the country, and she was seventh in total points.  Markou scored two or more goals in a game on 10 different occasions and finished with five hat tricks, including one at the national tournament against Butler. She was also named to the all-tournament team at nationals.

Broderick (Spencerport, NY), a sophomore goalie, was a two-time, first team All-Region III performer. She logged nearly 1,500 minutes in goal during the 2016 season, allowing just 14 shots past her for a 0.86 goals against average. She earned NJCAA National Keeper of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 10-16 after stopping all 13 shots she faced in three Tribune victories. Six of those saves came in a 3-0 shutout of previously-unbeaten Parkland.
