ROCHESTER - The top-ranked Eastern Florida State College Titans scored the go-ahead goal in the 61st minute and then held on to defeat Monroe Community College 2-1 in an exciting NJCAA women's soccer battle Saturday afternoon.
EFSC (4-0-1) then hung out down the stretch, with keeper Kiera Gibson thwarting a breakaway attempt by Monroe's Roosa Ariyo in the 81st minute to help clinch the victory. The 10th-ranked Tribunes fall to 5-3-0 on the season.
Ariyo got the MCC on the board in the first half. The nation's leading goal scorer took a terrific feed from Thenia Zervas in the 23rd minute and put it past Gibson for a 1-0 lead.
The Titans came back in the 30th minute, as Emily Bodi controlled a Monroe clearance attempt and sent a long shot into the net to tie it at one. It remained that way into the break.
Eastern Florida then came through with the game-winner in the 61st minute, as Aida Illas broke ahead of the Tribune defense and scored.
The Titans finished with a 22-10 edge in total shots, as well as an 11-6 advantage in corner kicks. Meryl Wakefield finished with five saves for Monroe.
