MCC swimmers capture regional, district titles
Both the Monroe men and women advance to the NJCAA championship meet.
ROCHESTER - The Monroe Community College men's and women's swimming and diving teams capped off a tremendous weekend by winning their respective Region III/Northeast District championships.
It was the 14th consecutive year the Monroe men have won, and the ninth straight for the women. The Tribunes now advance to the NJCAA championship meet, which will be held March 6-9 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
The MCC women finished with 559 points, finishing well head of runner-up Jamestown, which had 306. Third-place Herkimer County CC totaled 222.
Katie Hamilton (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) had another big day Sunday to cap an outstanding weekend. The sophomore won the 1650 free (19:12.78) and was part of a meet record-setting 400 free relay team. Hamilton finished the weekend with three individual victories and shared Region III/Northeast District Female Outstanding Performer honors with Mercyhurst's Destinee Godfrey.
Other winners on Sunday included Amber Landschoot (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) in the 200 back (2:25.01), Marguerite Zaepfel (Barker, NY/Barker) in the 100 free (55.36), and Ashley Dubois (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) in the 200 breast (2:47.74).
The 400 free relay team of Zaepfel, Hamilton, Landschoot, and Elizabeth Maier (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) set a meet record in a time of 3:45.59.
The MCC men cruised to the team title with a point total of 604. Second-place Genesee CC had 294.
A trio of winners highlighted the action Sunday. Tore Hansen (Skoutianten, Denmark/Zealand) took first in the 1650 free (17:15.43), Connor Kilmer (Auburn, NY/Auburn) won the 100 free (49.92), and Gaitan Gehin (Lausanne, Switzerland/August Piccard) won the 200 breast (2:15.25).
The 400 free relay team of Kevin Burns (Ravena, NY/RCS), Tyler Webster (Middlesex, NY/Marcus Whitman), Kilmer, and Hansen set a meet record with a time of 3:14.10.
