Second-half run helps MCC pull away from Genesee
The Tribunes move to 20-2 with an 80-66 victory over their regional foes.
ROCHESTER - The MCC men's basketball team shrugged off a cold-shooting first half to come away with an 80-66 victory over Genesee CC Thursday night on Monagan Court.
The Tribunes moved to 20-2 on the season. Monroe is a perfect 7-0 in Region III play.
The contest was tight throughout, with MCC clinging to a 61-59 lead with 6:45 left in the second half. The Tribunes then responded with a 13-1 run over the next 3:21 that put the game away.
Arnold Fripp (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Collegiate) started the run with a layup, which was followed by a 3-pointer from Tashawn Desir (Brooklyn, NY/Nia Prep) to make it 66-60.
Kenny Johnson (Philadelphia, PA/Abington Friends) then converted a 3-point play before Fripp knocked down a pair of free throws. Ta-Quan Zimmerman (Waterbury, CT/Holy Cross) capped the run with a 3-pointer of his own to make it 74-60.
Zimmerman led MCC with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fripp added 18 points and nine boards, and Johnson had 11 points and four assists. Malcolm McNair (Jacksonville, FL/Samuel L. Wolfson) registered nine points and six steals.
