MCC holds on to top Monroe College
The Lady Tribunes clinch the contest from the charity stripe.
ROCHESTER - The MCC women's basketball team came through from the foul line down the stretch to come away with a 68-60 victory over visiting Monroe College Sunday afternoon.
Karin Robinson (Queens, NY/Mary Louis Academy) nailed six consecutive free throws over the final 2:21 to help put the game away for the Tribunes (14-4), who have won 13 straight. Robinson finished with a game-high 19 points.
MCC looked as if it were going to run away early on, charging out to a 30-12 lead. But the Mustangs lifted their intensity on defense and cut the lead to 42-38 at the break.
The teams battled back and forth down the stretch, and the MCC lead was just one after a Mustang basket with 5:16 remaining.
Robinson then connected on a 3 to make it 60-56. She then collected a defensive rebound that led to a pair of free throws from Tyra Jones (Rochester, NY/East) with 3:50 left that made it 62-56.
The Mustangs then turned the ball over their next three possessions, with Robinson going 4-for-4 from the line to make it 66-56 with 46 seconds remaining. Monroe College broke the string with a basket, but Robinson then nailed two more from the charity stripe to ice it.
The Tribunes finished 27-of-32 from the foul line on the afternoon, with Robinson going 6-for-6and Dionne Coe (Brooklyn, NY/Murry Bergtraum) hitting all four of hers.
