Tribunes Sweep Mohawk Valley in Region III Doubleheader
UTICA, N.Y. -- Monroe Community College put together a pair of strong performances on Saturday, earning a doubleheader sweep over Mohawk Valley Community College in Region III action with wins of 9–6 and 8–3.
GAME ONE
Monroe Community College used a big late-inning surge to come from behind and defeat Mohawk Valley Community College, 9–6, on Saturday afternoon on the road in a Region III Matchup.
After falling behind 5–1 through five innings, the Tribunes flipped the game in their favor with a six-run swing across the final two frames.
Monroe got on the board in the fourth inning when Reagan Bannister drove in Olivia Miles to tie the game at 1–1. Mohawk Valley answered right back and built a 5–1 lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings, taking advantage of a pair of wild pitches and a Monroe error.
The Tribunes responded in a big way in the sixth. Kaydence Morrissette started the rally with an RBI single, and The Tribunes continued to apply pressure on the Hawks' defense. Two runs scored on an error before Abbie DeRock drove in the tying run on a fielder's choice, evening the score at 5–5.
Monroe carried that momentum into the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, DeRock drew a walk to give the Tribunes their first lead of the day. Another Mohawk Valley error pushed the lead to two, and Olivia Miles followed with an RBI single. Emma Toombs added an insurance run with a groundout, capping a four-run inning and extending the lead to 9–5.
Mohawk Valley added a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Tribunes held on to close it out to secure the win.
Miles led the Tribunes offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Bannister added two hits and drove in a run, while Morrissette scored twice and knocked in another. DeRock finished with two RBIs at the plate.
In the circle, DeRock went the distance, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits while striking out six to earn the win.
GAME TWO
Monroe Community College backed up its Game One comeback with a steady, complete performance in Game Two, defeating Mohawk Valley Community College 8–3
This one looked different from the start.
The Tribunes came out swinging and scored in each of the first three innings to grab control early. Olivia Miles got things going in the first with an RBI double to left-center, and Kaydence Morrissette followed in the second with a run-scoring single. One inning later, Miles went deep to center, pushing the lead to 3–0.
Mohawk Valley made things interesting in the fourth, stringing together a couple of runs to cut it to 3–2. Monroe didn't let it linger.
In the bottom half, the Tribunes answered right away. Abbie DeRock knocked in a run with a single, and Madalyn Robinson delivered the big swing of the inning—a two-run double that stretched the lead back to four.
The Hawks picked up a solo homer in the fifth, but that was as close as they would get.
Monroe added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. DeRock drove in one with a double, and Miles capped her big afternoon with an RBI single to make it 8–3.
Miles led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and three RBIs. DeRock and Robinson each drove in two runs, while Morrissette added a pair of hits as part of an 11-hit team effort.
In the circle, Amber Kohlmeier went the distance, scattering five hits and allowing three runs while striking out seven.
With the win, the Tribunes completed the doubleheader sweep and closed out the day with a strong all-around performance.
