Monroe sweeps Onondaga CC
By PAUL GOTHAM
ONONDAGA, N.Y. -- A trio of pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout, and Monroe Community College Baseball (18-6) went on to sweep a doubleheader (6-0/13-2) from host Onondaga Community College (12-12) in NJCAA action on Saturday.
Connor Osier (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) started and struck out seven over four innings to pick up the Game 1 win. The 6-foot-5 right-hander retired 11 of the first 12 he faced before surrendering back-to-back two-out hits in the fourth.
One appearance after issuing a season-high seven walks against Niagara County Community College, Osier limited his free passes to one in the 6-0 victory over Onondaga.
"The theme for the week was we had to clean up ball four," MCC head coach Dave Brust said of Osier's appearance on the mound. "The plan for him was to have a shortened outing and work on a couple things. I thought he did that.
"His command has improved significantly. For the first time in his career, he's being asked to pitch instead of trying to over-power hitters. He has grasped that and bought into it. He really pitched against OCC and wasn't too concerned with velocity and strikeouts. He was focused on pounding the strike zone."
Michael Sardou (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) sparked a two-out rally in the first that gave MCC all the runs it needed.
Sardou singled and scored when Aaron Reina (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) followed with his third triple of the season. Jack Duggan (Georgetown, ON/Georgetown District), who homered in both ends of the Tribunes sweep of Mohawk Valley CC earlier in the week, made it a 2-0 game with an RBI base hit.
Braedon Reina (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) doubled and scored on a Zane Barron (Ormond Beach, FL/Seabreeze) RBI groundout in the fourth.
The Tribunes put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Thomas Woodridge (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) drove in a run with a single and scored on Sardou's ninth double of 2026.
Tanner Holmes (Allenford, ON/Owen Sound District) connected on a one-out single to get the Tribs started in the seventh. Aidan Gallagher (Hopewell Junction/John Jay East Fishkill) reached on an error and also crossed home.
Cameron Bentley (Toronto, ON/Humberside) struck out four over two shutout innings of relief to pick up a save. The 6-foot-4 left-hander allowed one hit and faced one over the minimum.
Lucas Karelus (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) worked a scoreless fifth inning.
Duggan and Holmes had two hits apiece in Game 1.
"OCC is a balanced team," Brust said. "They're as dangerous as anybody in Region 3. It's good to go in there and play well."
Braedon Reina finished 4-for-4 in the nightcap including a double and a triple in an eight-run second when MCC sent 13 batters to the plate. Reina led the outburst with a two-bagger then cleared the bases with a triple in his second trip to the plate.
Woodridge drove in two in the frame. Sardou, Duggan and Jadon Wanat (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) added a run-scoring single apiece.
Reina drove in another run with a base hit in the fifth when Monroe scored five times to clinch the mercy-rule shortened victory.
Tyler Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) singled and drove in a pair of runs in Game 2. Duggan walked, scored and had an RBI. Andrew Macre (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) walked twice and crossed home twice.
Wanat and Woodridge both finished with two RBI and a run scored in the win.
Stefano Peloso (Ottawa, ON/St. Pius) accounted for a run.
Cos Zeiser (Victor, N.Y./Victor HS) struck out a career-high 11 batters to pick up the Game 2 win. The sophomore right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk over five innings.
"He was particularly strong," Brust said of his Game 2 starter. "Cos threw strikes early in the count and pitched well because of that."
Zeiser has allowed four runs (three earned) over his last 12 frames of work and improved to 4-0 on the season. Over 31.2 this campaign, he has fanned 44 while issuing 18. He has a WHIP of 1.39.
